In the latest issue of Food And Home Magazine, a local Santa Barbara publication there is an article about my photography. The author mentions my new series of surf shops, the Daily Photo Game, my start in downtown Los Angeles, that I teach at Brooks Institute, and my yellow Porsche with palm trees image.

Accompanying the article are some of my photos (of course) as well as a portrait of me.

Giffin and Crane Contractors

I have a great client named Giffin and Crane General Contractors. Bruce Giffin and Geoff Crane are not only truly nice guys, but they are the best in construction. What makes them a great client for me is they ask me, to do “my thing” for them. Every few months I get a call to photograph someone to use in a newsletter they send to clients. 

I get to “construct” a photograph for them. 

This is Eric Carlstedt. Giffin and Crane’s newsletter says he helps keep the plates spinning. That’s a lot like the way I make photographs. There are lots of details to keep track of and some things you can just never expect will happen. Most of the time I like those unexpected challenges. It comes from my days as an improvisational actor. When the unexpected happened on stage it was considered a gift. Driving to were Eric was working we passed this massive wall of rocks. It reminded me of the solid construction Giffin and Crane is known for, and it looks like it has been around for years. Just like the houses these guys build.

Eric was willing and trusting of my idea and added his sunglasses to give it that touch of humor I like to include in my portraits whenever appropriate.

Nancy Newcomer

This is Nancy Newcomer, who has website called Back to the Kitchen: Healthy Living with Real Food. It was my pleasure to photographed her for Ronald B. Dinning.  She was a joy to meet and has a wonderful smile.

Dr. Ronald B. Dinning has been a client for some years now. Each time I am asked to make a photo for his advertisements I am thrilled by the great smiles his patients have. But that’s what Dr. Dinning does. He makes you want to smile.

Jonata and Wine Spectator Magazine

I had a great time getting to know another local wine maker, Matt Dees at Jonata vineyards in Santa Ynez. Wine Spectator hired me to make these images.

I spent the day making portraits, and then was left in the vineyard until sunset to make photos of the vines and Oak Trees. 

Jonata is Chumash for Oak.

Urban Wine Trail

The urban wine trail is a new and refreshing thing here in Santa Barbara.

I was asked to shoot some of the tasting rooms by Santa Barbara’s own Food and Home magazine.

Some of the older parts of town are being re-gentrified by the Santa Barbara County wine industry. 

Even the area know as the

 Funk Zone

 has seen a complete resurgence of weekend population. 

Just a few that I made images at are 

Kunin, 

Grassini, 

Carr 

and Oreana. 

They all have great wines and a wonderful tasting rooms to sip in.

Plough Wine Group, Edible San Luis Obispo

Karrie Crane from Edible San Luis Obispo asked me to photograph the Plough Wine Group. They come from all over the county. They are from Santa Maria to Paso Robles. All good wine country.

Their busy schedule only allowed them to get in front of my camera at different times. Karrie saw my Lone Pine work on my web site and asked if we could do something like that. It was the perfect solution to this group’s dilemma.

It is made up of 5 exposures, one of each person (and the dog, Hank) and then put together using some digital magic. I’m happy with the results. It looks like they were all there at the same time in one capture.

Thanks Karrie for taking the risk and thanks to the Plough Wine Group for trusting me when I was giving them those crazy directions. 

By the way I have tasted some of their wines and they are delicious.

Giffin & Crane

I have a great client named Giffin and Crane Construction. Bruce Giffin and Geoff Crane are not only truly nice guys, but they are the best in construction. I get to construct a photograph for them. 

This one of Project Engineer Steve Potter was just that, a construction project. Steve was game for my ideas of making it look like he was able to walk on water. 

What you don’t see in this image is all of the infrastructure we had to create to hold it together. Just like a house, you don’t notice the foundation, the wall studs, or insulation, what you see are the finishes.

This was made of lots of parts. The sky was from one frame, and becasue the clouds were moving the dappled sunlight on the house and lawn came from still another frame. The light used on Steve’s face was rather close to him and had to be removed. And then of course there is the capture of Steve, again it’s own snap. I had to make sure everything fit together. Also, I love to suggest a little humor in my photographs whenever I can and so the umbrella adds just that little bit of question.
